The canning process can vary slightly from one product to another, but there are three main steps. These include:

  • Processing: Food is peeled, sliced, chopped, pitted, boned, shelled or cooked.
  • Sealing: The processed food is sealed in cans.
  • Heating: Cans are heated to kill harmful bacteria and prevent spoiling.

Common canned foods include fruits, vegetables, beans, soups, meats and seafood.

Canned foods are not the best  option for your health, here are some scientific factS to ponder before you buy them…..

  • They may contain trace amounts of Bisphenol-A (BPA).BPA (Bisphenol-A) is a chemical that is often used in food packaging, including cans.

    Studies show that the BPA in canned food can migrate from the can’s lining into the food you eat.

  • They are very high in sodium and sugar.Some canned foods can be high in salt. While this does not pose a health risk for most people, it may be problematic for some, such as those with high blood pressure.

     

    Excess sugar has been associated with an increased risk of many diseases, including obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

  • They contain preservatives, colorants.
  • Some of them may contain PVC, a type of plastic.
  • Most of them are contamined by deadly bacteria and fungus, as well as other microbes.Canned foods that weren’t processed properly may contain dangerous bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum.Consuming contaminated food can cause botulism.
  • Some of them are known to have MSG (Monosodium glutamate), a flavor enhancer known to cause several helth problems like cognitive decline.

 

ADVICE

  • It’s important to never eat from cans that are bulging, dented, cracked or leaking, dicoloration, foul odors.
  • As with all foods, it’s important to read the label and ingredient list.
  • If salt intake is a concern for you, choose the “low sodium” or “no salt added” option.
  • To avoid extra sugar, choose fruits canned in water or juice instead of syrup.
  • Draining and rinsing foods can also lower their salt and sugar contents.
  • Eat fresh whenever possible.
  • Choose powdered infant formula instead of canned.
  • Look for containers stated as BPA-free.
